If Mother Nature didn’t like curves, she would’ve made the world flat!!
Isn’t this saying so true? Yes, and Fashion & Lifestyle Council (FLC) is a messiah to several such plus sized women and their dreams!
Being plus sized and Big so resonates with the average Indian woman! Don’t our mothers keep feeding us and over feeding us till they feel that our curves are back? Why some of our Mom’s favorite dialogues are ?…
अरे तू तो सूख के काटा हो गयी है!
कोई इसको देसी घी खिलाओ l
No matter how funny these conversations with our mothers get, this is the reality of an Average Indian Woman! She proudly owns her curves and loves to flaunt them too! But sudden changes in the fashion arena from the recent past, made Size-Zero mandatory for women. The paparazzi were always focused on skinny women. The media wanted to celebrate only thin women and ignore more natural, curvy and larger women.
Our culture has always promoted the plus size and we were never really that size conscious. We Indians have always known to love our Desi-Ghee curves. The fashion industry however, has a problem from the Plus-Size. Though plus-size women represent 68% of shoppers worldwide! Reminds me of a time when I wanted to buy some expensive beach wear for a trip to the beach side however could not grab even a single piece!
Women are always asked to work on their outer presentation from a younger age. Be it any industry a certain way of dressing up, looks and size makes them acceptable. Thin women irrespective of the other things find it easier to land up with jobs for that matter. Plus Size women however won’t be that lucky.
Wanting to look perfect is every woman’s ask these days and it is easy to be and look fashionable when you are thin. However, if you are plus sized the others have too much to ask from you! For example, people in your circle might ask you to get back in shape or to appear more presentable.
The tag of being curvy comes with its own set of prices! The dreams and ambition of a curvy female on both professional and personal grounds suffer a major setback. These women are also constantly ashamed of their bodies which overall affects their self-confidence. They have lesser stylish options to wear, since many fashion wear brands do not manufacture clothes for plus size! Online or offline, shopping for plus-size women is often tedious and happens with careful analysis of measurements and innumerable outfit trials!
Any and every individual forms a negative image for big people! Any industry for that matter has a plus-size problem. It is about time we fix this. It is about time to revolutionize our thought processes to accept curvy women! Change is on the horizon. Inclusivity is the future of plus-size women. And included they will be at India’s one of its kind pageant for plus size men and women. That is gender inclusive too!
