Fashion has always played a vital role when it comes to weddings. Earlier, brides just wore traditional red sarees for their wedding ceremony. But now the times have changed and so has the fashion trend, the whole wedding revolves around what the bride will wear and what designer should they approach.
Indian weddings are famous across the whole wide world for their larger-than-life appeal, extravagant decor, and gorgeous clothes. With months and even years of planning culminating into a day, it is bound to be a big, fat affair. Subarna Devendran is one such Indian Fashion designer with her own fashion label ‘SD Couture’ who would certainly make your big day happening.
Subarna Devendran completed her Science diploma from IITC before graduating from Instituti Calligary Milano University in the year 2013. Post her graduation, she started her career in the fashion industry by freelancing for big brands like Siyarams, Raymond, etc along with a few fashion designers.
Subarna started her journey when she introduced her first collection “Navaratan” inspired by the different gemstones. She has worked with big brands before starting her own label as a fashion stylist. Subarna began designing her own collection by using her mother’s sarees and old salwar suits to make outfits for herself. After praises from her family and friends, she started to put together her own designs and create her own brand.
Subarna started her own label “Subarna Devendran Couture” in the year 2017 with a few custom made collections for her family and friends. She also showcased her collections at a few exhibitions. Subarna Devendran always finds a different and unique inspiration for her collections, be it a painting, color or gemstones, etc. Subarna specializes in Modern-Ethnic wear for women and men with a blend of contemporary and traditional touch.
“For my wedding collection”, Says Subarna, “I always try to get a traditional inspiration. The collection Navratan Collection was inspired by the 9 different gemstones and how each stone symbolizes a unique meaning to it. For months, we did thorough research on the gemstones and the kind of embroidery we can get out of it. Looking at the latest trends, not every bride chooses to wear a traditional red lehenga or saree. Based on this, we created 9 heavy bridal outfits inspired from every different gemstones including emerald, sapphire, etc.”
“The gemstones used in the outfits are handstitched and mixed up with different types of embroidery. Most of the outfits in this collection are hand-made and created for the perfect occasion of weddings. The most interesting part in using gemstones as an inspiration is the vibrant and unique colors. The bold green color of Emerald brings out a very prestigious look and sets it apart from the regular colors involved in any wedding. The satin ghagra was paired with a bold sequence work blouse with an open back.”
“Since red is a very traditional color, we opted to go for a Ruby influenced piece. Mixing red stones with a heavy zardosi work gave us an idea of making that outfit our showstopper. The red three piece lehenga weighed around 9kgs with the heavy embroidery and sequence work done. Our main aim for this collection was to give the bride a combination of the latest trend, comfort and luxury. Mixing western patterns and styles with traditional taste is our main forte with this collection.”
“We even designed 3 special outfits for the groom or man, in black, white and silver separate from the whole gemstone collection. Even men need to dress up to match up with their partners’ outfit right? We created three different looks with embroideries like phulkari, zardosi and mirror work. A unique contrast in light weight sherwani’s with a fusion touch makes for a stylish look, be it the groom or any family member.”
