FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) has launched its new initiative on April 13th, 2019 for recognizing the Role of Women in Agriculture – ‘Economic Independence for Women in Agriculture in India.
Ms. Harjinder Kaur Talwar, MD, and CEO at Comvision India Pvt Ltd have taken up the mantle as the National President of FLO, from the former President Ms. Pinky Reddy during the 35th Annual Session.
Ms. Talwar began her tenure by launching Agriculture Initiative for empowering women from the sector, on the auspicious day of Baisakhi, the harvest festival of Punjab. FLO, the premier women business organization of India, recognizes that agriculture, the primary economic activity continues to be important in achieving the growth of India’s economy and welfare of its people.
This is the first time that FLO has taken up Agriculture as one of its primary initiative towards the goal of women empowerment. Harjinder Kaur Talwar says, “With this initiative, FLO aims to play the role of the facilitator and thought the leader in changing lives of women, by Empowering Women them economically and otherwise by being the collective voice for policy change.”
She further adds, “What better way to start my term as the President of FLO, the premier business chamber, catering to the goal of women empowerment. I am privileged to launch an initiative that recognizes the role of women who are actively engaged in the agriculture sector and plays an important role in all the stages of the agricultural value system. And it coincides with the day which is observed by Punjab’s farming community as a day of thanksgiving for the abundant harvest and also seeks blessings for future prosperity and progress.”
The statistics and the studies point out to a simple fact, “The daughters of soil contribute to increasing productivity and efficiency of rural economy and agriculture.” It isn’t just about ‘Sons of soil now’. The Agriculture Census (2010-11) shows that out of an estimated 118.7 million cultivators, 30.3% were females. Similarly, out of an estimated 144.3 million agricultural laborers, 42.6% were females.
The event was a grand success and ended on a musical note with eminent Bollywood playback singer and performer, Mika Singh, and Minu Bakshi, a multi-talented artist performing for the audience.
